“The work I was inspired by is "Bahram Gur at the Home of Baraham the Jew," Page from an Illustrated Manuscript of the Second Small Shahnama of Firdawsi ...
This work is currently in the Brooklyn Museum. What captured me about this project is the story written on it. "It describes the legendary lives of the kings of Iran from creation to the Arab conquest of the country between the 630s and the 650s. " For some reason, most of my art revolves around identity, and the first thing I thought of a childhood book that I've read like a million times. It is a folklore book in Khmer. I grow up reading a lot of folklore. What is interesting about folklore is that it traveling across the world and each culture put their twist to it. One story might exist in Cambodia but I also notice a similar story exist in South America. For me, this work is to highlight the beauty of storytelling through art. The oldest written story in the world was captured in stone, which is why I engrave the story into the clay. The color choice makes it more aesthetically pleasing to go on top of my table. I like to make art that is useful in everyday life and still have meaning.” -Sonyta Bun
