"I was drawn to this painting because of the style, the color, and the idea behind it. To me, Matisse's style is so fearless and and bold and I love the colors of this setting. The museum website also explains the idea behind it, the coexistence of humankind and nature, and I was also really drawn to that. I decided to draw inspiration from the style and the idea behind this painting. I also tried to incorporate a component of our current situation. I painted a woman sunbathing in her overgrown garden in the city, and I tried to convey a coexistence between the sunbather and her surrounding nature, as well as elements of the city. The idea of sunbathing in your garden or on your roof is something brought out by our quarantine which I thought would make it an interesting painting." -Sadie Pickering
