and "Madame Manet" by Edouard Manet 1880
"I saw the mihrab in real life a few months ago and fell in love with the intricate detail and the comfort of its niche hull, a level of detail and comfort unknown today. Madame Manet's portrait inspired me because it uses unclear lines and she is veiled, just like many of us now can't see what is in front of us in time.
I wanted to create a person pushing at the edges of the prayer niche, holding (symbolically to God, even though I am not highly religious)but also pushing past the boundaries of space, representative, of our confinement. I drew the woman from the niche from behind with brush pen, mirroring the lack of clarity in Manet's expressive work.
My piece is drawn completely with brush pen, gel pen, and pencil." -Noah D Stengel-Eskin
