"I was inspired by the 2011 print piece called "Iguaca" by Alexis Roman, which I found on the Whitney site. I was struck by the simplicity (it's just an orange print on a white background), but at the same time the detail and shading of the bird itself is so intricate. I tried to emulate that in my own version, which I made out of finished crossword puzzles I'd been doing. My mom called it "crossbird," which I guess is sticking. I attempted to create texture and shading through using different boxes (Black, white, small, or filled in)."-Emily Zas
